Ten Questions from the Archivist

A bit late for a Christmas Quiz, as was my original intention. Still, you all like quizzes, don’t you? Here then are ten little teasers for you. Just a bit of fun, and if you want to send me your answers contact me via the Guild website. I’ll give the answers in a month or so.

A. Photographs.

  1. Easy enough to work out where and when this was taken, but who is that standing second from the right?

  2. It’s easy to identify some very well known ringers here; but who are the two little children?

  3. This photograph too has some ringers you will immediately recognise. Who is that on the back row, third from the left?

  4. This is a wonderful photograph. That dashing gentleman seated on the right with a splendid moustache left our shores. Who was he?

  5. The ringers are all named in this photograph. Why was it taken?

B. Others

  1. On some peal boards the name Merchant’s Return can be found. No need to tell me who the Merchant was and where he was returning from; but exactly what was Merchant’s Return?
  2. How many towers can you name, not in the old (pre-1974) County of Cheshire and the Chester Diocese, which used to be in the CDG, but are no longer affiliated to us?
  3. Which band of (now) well-known ringers rang their first handbell peal standing up?
  4. You all know – or should do – who the current Guild Librarian is; but who were his predecessors?
  5. Who was the first woman to ring a peal for the Guild?
